The ceramics pottery at Blue Moon Clay Studio is all
hand formed on the potter’s wheel and fired in a kiln.
This ceramics has two layers of attention that creates the final finish.
The first layer is the satin surface. After the vessel is thrown on
the potter’s wheel, it is hand polished, a process called burnishing.
This pottery is burnished several times, waiting many hours in between
each burnishing.
The second layer you see is the unusual soft colors on the surface
of these vessels. This is the result of the saggar firing. There is
no glaze on any of this pottery. Each vessel is nested in natural
materials, such as hay, sawdust, seaweed, cornhusk and minerals and
fired in a kiln. The combusting of these organics in conjunction with
the vapor flashing from the minerals creates a soft palate of orange,
pink, grey, black and yellow on each piece.
As a result of this dramatic, organic process, no two pieces are alike
and the ceramics pottery is not designed to hold water.
