Ceramic tile art also known as “fire paintings”
is created by ceramic artist Brenda McMahon in her studio located
in Greenwich, New York. Brenda makes all her painted ceramic tiles
by hand. In her signature saggar style, Brenda creates the soft, abstracted
landscape imagery by layering natural materials such as grass, wire
and sawdust on the ceramic tiles.
She intuitively understands how the materials interact with the flames
dancing across the surface of the tiles and thus designs these quiet
yet powerful paintings. It has taken Brenda more than a decade to
perfect this firing process. These “fire paintings” contain
strong, sensitive, compelling imagery, a fine balance of control and
serendipity producing an exquisite painted ceramic tile art piece
to enhance the esthetic beauty of any home.
About her painted ceramic tile art Brenda says:
“Organic material is my brush
and the mystical alchemy of ancient fire, my muse.
I design these “fire paintings” as abstract, sometimes
emotional landscapes.
The designs can also take their own course, much like nature itself,
entering the realm of celestial kaleidoscopes and surprises beyond.
I often wonder about these surprises,
is it the Big Bang in every fire or
hidden mystical lands, yet discovered?”
All “Fire Paintings” are one-of-a-kind, decorative wall
pieces. Smaller tiles are designed to hang on a standard hook in any
home or office. Larger fire paintings can be delivered and
installed free of charge. “Fire Painting”
ceramic tiles are unglazed and fired in all natural materials. Ceramic
art tiles designed for kitchen backsplashes or bathroom tiles must
be treated with a sealant before installation. See Brenda's "fire
paintings" in the new book 500 Tiles
by Lark Publishing.
